Galen Denny was born
in Palmdale, California with the surname Denning, which
was altered to Denny. The selfpenned '' What Ya Gonna Do
About It' (55164) from 1958 supposedly featured Eddie
Cochran. Gale graduated from the University of
California at Santa Barbara with a music degree. He
recorded in many styles - jazz, blues, folk on the
Trend/Century 21 label, where he has at least 5 album
releases (booklet CD-55001). |

John
'Plas' Johnson Jr. (born 21 July
1931 in Donaldson, Louisiana), known since
childhood as Plas Johnson, is an American tenor saxophonist,
probably most familiar as the lead on Henry Mancini’s Pink Panther theme.
He and his pianist brother Ray first
recorded as the Johnson Brothers in New Orleans in the late 1940s, and
Plas then toured with R&B singer Charles Brown. After army service, he
moved to Los Angeles and began session recordings as a full-time musician,
backing artists such as B.B. King and Johnny Otis as well as scores of
other R&B performers. One of his early supporters was Maxwell Davis,
who hired him to take over his own parts so that he could concentrate on
producing sessions for the Modern record label. Recruited
by Capitol Records in the mid-1950s, Johnson also played on countless
records by Peggy Lee, Nat "King" Cole, Frank Sinatra and others.
He remained a leading session player for almost twenty years, averaging
two sessions a day and playing everything from movie soundtracks to rock
and roll singles, such as Ricky Nelson. He played on many of the Beach
Boys’ records and was an integral part of a number of instrumental
groups. In
1963, he recorded the Pink Panther theme, but ironically, played on only
the first few of the cartoon series. He was also used by Motown, and
played on hits by Marvin Gaye, the Supremes and others. In
1970, he joined the studio band for "The Merv Griffin Show" and
also played with a number of jazz and swing bands of the period. He
continues to record and perform, particularly at jazz festivals (based on
Wikipedia). |

Troyce Key.
Born in Louisiana in 1937 in a small house fifteen miles from civilisation,
the son of white sharecroppers, it is not such a surprise that Troyce became
a bluesman. He has known hard times, in fact when his dad worked on the
railroad they lived in a box car. In the early fifties Troyce was absorbing
the music of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, The Four Aces, The Crewcuts, Patti
Page, etc ... then, in Mississippi, he heard Lightning Hopkins and at
sixteen was firmly entrenched in blues. It was at this time that he caught
TB and had a lenghty spell in hospital that culminated in having a lung and
some ribs removed. However, a lot of records were donated to the hospital,
among them Johnny Otis, Lowell Fulson, Lightning Hopkins etc, so upon
leaving, a converted Troy picked up guitar. He then started playing in clubs
around 1956. A demo resulted in 1958 and he took it to Hollywood where he
was signed by Warner Brothers. Troyce claims to be the first blues singer to
sign with Warner's. His first
release featured Eddie Cochran on lead guitar, jazz guitarist Howard
Roberts on rhythm and Earl Palmer on drums. The record
proved popular with both Alan Freed and Dee Clark with whom he did shows, at
the Cow Palace in San Francisco with Eddie Cochran and Ritchie Valens and in
New York with Bo Diddley. His second disc was 'Watch Your Mouth', a great
side, the background voices being the Four Sharps later to be known as The
Olympics. By the third issue Troyce knew he was on the way out and then
decided to get closer to the blues. Troyce paired with J.J. Malone in 1961
to form The Rhyth Rockers. (information from the sleeve notes of the USA LP 'Í've
Gotta New Car' by Troyce Key, J.J. Malone & The Rhythm Rockers (Red Lightnin
RL 0028).
First
release on Warner Brothers Records in 1958. Troyce Key died November 9,
1992 in Oakland, California. Singles discography:
