Showaddywaddy are a 1970s pop group from Leicester,
England. They specialised in revivals of hit songs from the 1950s, and
dressed as Teddy Boys. The band was formed in 1973 with the unusual
feature of having two vocalists, a couple of drummers and two bassists.
Their first single, "Hey Rock and Roll" was released in April 1974. It
reached number two in the UK Singles Chart. Showaddywaddy then went on
to have a further 22 UK hits from this point until late 1982. They had
most of their biggest hits with covers of songs from the 1950s and
1960s. These cover versions included "Three Steps to Heaven" (UK top 10
hit and originally by Eddie Cochran in 1960), "Heartbeat" (originally
written and recorded by Buddy Holly), "Under the Moon of Love" (originally
a U.S. hit for Curtis Lee in 1961 and co-written by Tommy Boyce), "When"
(originally by the Kalin Twins), "You Got What It Takes" (originally by
Marv Johnson) "Dancin' Party" (originally by Chubby Checker), "I Wonder
Why" (originally by Dion and the Belmonts), "Blue Moon" (based on The
Marcels' interpretation) and another Curtis Lee original "Pretty Little
Angel Eyes". Their most recent chart single was "Who Put the Bomp (In
the Bomp-A-Bomp-A-Bomp)", a minor number 37 hit in 1982. In total they
had ten Top Ten singles, a solitary number one ("Under the Moon of Love"
in 1976), and spent 209 weeks in the UK Singles Chart. At the peak of
their popularity, this tally included having seven, successive Top Five
entries. Their biggest selling single was the aforementioned "Under the
Moon of Love", which sold 985,000 copies (Wikipedia). |

The Flying Lizards were a British experimental rock
group formed by and led by David Cunningham, the group included
avant-garde and free improvising musicians. The group released an album
entitled The Flying Lizards in 1979; their singles include the
postmodern cover versions of songs such as Eddie Cochran's "Summertime
Blues" (1978) and James Brown's "Sex Machine" (1984), as well as several
originals. Their album Top Ten consists entirely of covers, done in a
deliberately emotionless, harsh and robotic style. Their version of
Barrett Strong's "Money" remains popular, and was used in the film
soundtracks for The Wedding Singer, Empire Records, Charlie's Angels and
Lord of War, as well as in the Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning
American television medical drama, Nip/Tuck (Wikipedia). |

The Rolling Stones are an English band whose music was
initially based on rhythm and blues and rock & roll. Formed in London
and having their first success in the UK, they subsequently became
popular in the US during the "British Invasion" in the early 1960s. The
band formed in 1962 and it's early recordings were mainly covers of
American blues and R&B songs. Their 1965 single "(I Can't Get No)
Satisfaction" established the Rolling Stones as a premier rock and roll
act. In 1989 the Rolling Stones were inducted into the American Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2004 they were ranked number 4 in Rolling
Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. They are also ranked
as the number 2 artists of all time on Acclaimedmusic.net. During the
1969 American tour, tour manager Sam Cutler introduced them as "The
Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World", a title which has remained.
Their image of unkempt and surly youth is one that many musicians still
emulate (Wikipedia). |

Owen Castleman, better known
by his stage name Boomer Castleman, was an American
singer-songwriter and guitarist from Farmers Branch, Texas. He was a
one-hit wonder, hitting the US charts in 1975 with the single "Judy
Mae", which peaked at #33.
Castleman is also the
inventor of the palm pedal, a device that allow guitar players to
execute pedal steel-style string bends. He made his original prototype
in 1968, and the device is now marketed under the name Bigsby Palm Pedal.
The original patent has expired, allowing other vendors to market
similar devices, but the Bigsby/Castleman version is the original
(Wikipedia). |

Alan Jackson (born 17 October 1958 in Newnan, Georgia)
is an American country singer-songwriter who has sold over 40 million
records. He was influenced by the new traditional country of the 1980s,
and he was one of the most popular country singers of the 1990s,
blending both honky tonk and mainstream country sounds and penning many
of his own hits. His success continued into the 2000s and his music
became increasingly counterposed with that of more mainstream country
acts that were moving toward a more pop music sound. He is the recipient
and nominee of multiple awards. He was inducted into the Georgia Music
Hall of Fame in 2001. Alan Jackson's version of 'Summertime Blues' was recorded for his 1994
album 'Who I Am', released in 1994, reached Number One on the U.S.
Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart and #4 on the Bubbling
Under Hot 100 (equivalent to #104 on the Billboard Hot 100) (Wikipedia). |
