"Compiled in conjunction with Cochran
authority, long-timefan
and founder of Rockstar Records
Tony Barrett,
this comprehensive 2-CD set draws upon recordings from the mid-50s’
Cochran Brothers era and session material from Cochran’s tenure with
LA-based indie label Crest.
From his relatively obscure beginnings on the West Coast Country
circuit, this gem-laden package charts the artist’s journey as a
writer, arranger, player and performer, right up to and beyond his
departure for Liberty Records and the international stardom that
followed."

This review of the Castle
Music digipack 2-CD package 'Guitar Picker' is written by Phil Davies.

What a stellar release, does exactly what it says on the tin, Rare
Recordings 54-60, a perfect addition to the EMI 4cd set. Even if the
sainted Bear Family eventually get around to a definitive box set this
2cd digi pack from Castle is nigh perfect. It has had excellent reviews
in both Now Dig This and mainstream UK mag Mojo. Over the decades we
have been most fortunate to benefit from the dogged and dedicated
research by Rockstar’s Tony Barrett and this set compiled by the Duke of
Rockstar hisself and
Castle’s Sam Szczepanski is a stunning tribute to the young geetar
slinger from Albert Lea. |
|
|
|
The marvellous packaging itself is reason enough for purchasing, the
cover artwork has that great colour outdoor shot of the be-denimed
Gretsch god and the title is most apt. What I’d give to be at that Luman/Cochran
session.Love that pick of Ed n Shar flipping thru the lp racks at
Wallichs Music Store, odds on it’s a Ray Charles album. |
|
|
 |
It’s almost a best of Rockstar (yes we could all pick slightly different
tracks but the playing order is great) there are 50 tracks, 48 musical
and two interviews with a hidden bonus live cut of C`mon Everybody from
Boy Meets Girls at the end. The photos/label shots etc are really well
chosen and this large digi double cd size gives better justice to one of
the most photogenic of them all rather than those cramped single cd
booklets which make one pine for London/Liberty/Rockstar lps. |
|
|
|
The musical content shows all the different aspects of the multi
talented Californian “Citizen Gretsch”, session man, country and proto
rockabilly duo, studio experimenter, instrumentalist, fame seeking
teenager, established million seller, consummate live performer,
wonderful tv star and articulate interviewee. All in great sound quality
or historically interesting enough to warrant inclusion. Personally I
would have loved a live track from the Rockstar Town Hall party video or
the stunning Whole Lotta Shaking cut with Little Richard’s road band and
using Johnny Meeks Fender, from the Australian radio show (available
where else but exclusively on a Rockstar cd) but all in all this is a
stunning 5 star release, we’ve come a long way from rumoured tracks
feature din articles in Mick Miriams and Pete Morgan’s ground
breaking fanzines through to the wonderful reality of regular Rockstar
cds. |
|
|
|
The waters in the Cochran well will run dry eventually but Tony B has
given us one hell of a rocket ride along the way. The icing on the cake
has to be the lavishly and luxuriously illustrated 34 page booklet
annotated in superlative style by the ever reliable Stu Colman,
absolutely spot on, informative and educational to read. |

Favourite tracks? Easy just press the ole shuffle button, never fails. |

|
|
Thanks to all concerned with this project on behalf of Cochran fans
across the world, I hope it garners the sales it deserves. I’ve probably
worn out my copy from endless repeat play. Stuff yer downloads a package
like this is always most welcome, the reissue of the year, any year, sod
the Brit Awards this really is something` else. |
|
|
|
I’m writing to my local congressman (and yes I’m old enough to vote)
demanding that Sir Anthony of Rockstar gets to boogie down that Dark
Lonely Street to Rockingham Palace man like now –wouldn’t be a Rockstar
release without DLS would it?? |
